Session I – The Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management (previously called the Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management: Basics) training elements introduce the attendee to the most basic regulations and procedures in the handling, storing, and shipping of hazardous waste. The information is provided at a relaxed pace, giving the attendees time to ask questions as well as to begin to grasp the concepts and practices in enough detail to start reliably performing most tasks on the job. Several exercises are included during the session as well as a workshop, review of the material, and self-evaluation exercise.

Session II – The Compliance with DOT Regulations: Training, Testing and Certification training elements meet the general requirements for hazmat employee training within 90 days of hazmat shipment duty assignment. This session accomplishes hazmat employee familiarization in safe loading, unloading, handling, storage, and shipment. Security awareness and security planning topics are also addressed. Attendees are tested, instructor certified, and provided with a hazmat employee/employer training record as required for compliance with the regulations. While this session can be used to comply with DOT's periodic recurrent training requirement, the Winter Institute version of this session is primarily intended for new hazmat employees and is paced accordingly.
