28th Annual
Hazardous Waste Management
Summer Institute

August 3 – 7, 2009 • Columbia, Missouri

Institute Mission

The Winter and Summer Institutes are designed to train managers, consultants, regulators, and workers in the requirements, correct procedures, problem solving techniques, and compliance issues associated with the safe generation, storage, transportation and disposal of hazardous waste. Based on over 25 years of experience in teaching these subjects, MU has evolved two institutes (Winter and Summer) designed to allow anyone in the hazardous waste field to learn, develop, and update skills and knowledge from the most basic level to the most advanced issues facing business today.

The Winter Institute accomplishes two objectives.

First, Course 1 – Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management: Basics, introduces the attendee to the most basic regulations and procedures in the handling, storing, and transporting of hazardous waste. The information is provided at an appropriate pace, giving the attendee time to grasp concepts and practices in enough detail to start reliably performing most tasks on the job. Several exercises are included in the course as well as a workshop, review of the material, and self-evaluation exam. A discussion of the latest issues and initiatives of the EPA is also included.

Second, Compliance with DOT Regulations: Training, Testing and Certification, meets the same requirements of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Uniform Safety Act (HM-126F) for training within 90 days of employment and retraining every three years. This course accomplishes hazmat employee familiarization in safe loading, unloading, handling, storage and transportation. Security awareness and security planning topics are also addressed. Attendees are tested, instructor certified, and provided with a hazmat employee/employer training record as required for compliance with the regulations.

The University provides all attendees with a certificate of attendance and a certificate of continuing education units.

The Summer Institute is designed to move the Winter Institute attendee to the next level of detail. It also provides an opportunity for practicing engineers, managers, regulators, and hazardous waste workers to update their knowledge concerning the most advanced topics in hazardous waste management.

Course 2 – Introduction to Hazardous Waste Management: Intermediate, is a comprehensive discussion of generator management issues. The attendee receives extensive handouts including EPA, DOT and OSHA related CFRs, and other key and important materials used daily, on the job, by professionals in the field. Several exercises are included in the course as well as a self-evaluation exam. A discussion of the latest issues and initiatives of the EPA and the DOT is also included.

The Advanced Hazardous Waste Management course is held during the last two days of the Summer Institute. It explores the most difficult and contentious contemporary issues facing managers and regulators. This portion of the Summer Institute includes a half-day devoted to regulatory and legal updates by federal and state regulatory speakers.

The University provides all attendees with a certificate of attendance and a certificate of continuing education units.
