Module 1: Training Overview and Introduction to Federal Regulations
Approximately 1 hour.
The opening module establishes the mission of Session I, introduces the structure of the training, and provides a time for the attendees to begin networking. It includes a brief overview of the Federal Laws applicable to hazardous waste management as well as the Federal agencies responsible for the regulations governing hazardous waste management.
Module 2: Overview of EPA Hazardous Waste Regulations
Approximately 45 minutes.
This module introduces the attendees to the structure of the EPA regulations based on RCRA governing hazardous waste management. The regulations specifically applicable to generators of hazardous waste are highlighted for discussion later.
Module 3: How to Identify Hazardous Wastes
Approximately 2 hours.
This module begins with the presentation of the definitions of solid waste and hazardous waste. The majority of the time is spent on a discussion of how to perform a hazardous waste determination. The module concludes with an exercise demonstrating how to apply the regulations to example wastes.

Module 4: Overview of Generator Responsibilities
Approximately 1 hour.
This module provides an overview of the EPA standards applicable to each category of hazardous waste generator.
Module 5: Generator Management Basics
Approximately 3 hours, 15 minutes.
This module reviews the EPA standards applicable to each category of hazardous waste generator using an environmental management systems approach. Specific emphasis is placed on the development of operating procedures for the proper management of hazardous wastes. The presentation also covers hazardous materials management and safety aspects. Photographs are used to illustrate and demonstrate best practices.
Module 6: Overview of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations
Approximately 1 hour.
This module introduces the attendees to the structure of the DOT regulations governing the shipment and transportation of hazardous materials including hazardous substances and hazardous wastes. The shipping regulations specifically applicable to generators of hazardous waste are highlighted for discussion later.

Module 7: Pre-Shipment Preparations
Approximately 45 minutes.
This module is used to begin the transition from EPA-based operational procedures to DOT-based operational procedures. The discussions include the management of hazardous wastes for eventual shipment, obtaining the services of a hazardous waste transporter, and obtaining the services of a hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility.
Module 8: How to Use the 101 Table
Approximately 2 hours.
This module addresses the procedures used to properly identify DOT hazardous materials. The classification of hazardous materials into the DOT hazard classes, divisions, and packing groups is also covered.
Module 9: Shipment Preparation Basics
Approximately 2 hours.
This module addresses the DOT regulations applicable to the packaging, marking, labeling, and placarding of hazardous wastes for shipment. Specific emphasis is placed on the proper documentation of hazardous waste shipments including emergency response information. The module includes an exercise demonstrating how to recognize properly formatted shipping descriptions. The module concludes with a detailed discussion of the Hazardous Waste Manifest system.

Module 10: Land Disposal Restrictions
Approximately 2 hours.
This module provides an overview of the EPA standards applicable to generators of land disposal restricted hazardous wastes. Specific emphasis is placed on the development of the records that must be kept for inspection by the EPA.
Workshop
Approximately 2 hours.
The balance of the morning of Day 3 is spent in an instructor-directed workshop designed to provide the attendees with an additional opportunity to learn how to make hazardous waste determinations and prepare hazardous wastes for shipment.
Trends
Approximately 1 hour.
The afternoon of Day 3 begins with a regulatory update highlighting the most significant proposed EPA regulations.

Review
Approximately 1 hour.
The afternoon of Day 3 continues with a review of the topics and materials presented in Training Modules 1 through 10.
Exam
Approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes.
The Course 1 concludes with a self-evaluation exam. The exam consists of 40 questions. A mixture of true-false, multiple choice, and matching types is used. The attendees are allowed to use their books and notes as well as to collaborate with other attendees. The exam is not collected or graded. The final module of the course presents the answers and provides one last forum for discussion.
