Conference Highlights

Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL)
Summer Institute

Picture of Speaker at GICL ConferenceThe Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership's 2005 Summer Institute was held at the University of Missouri campus in Columbia May 16-20. It was the 34th Institute class, joining the ranks of more than 1400 alumni.

In one the largest classes ever, GICL drew from the educational resources at the University of Missouri and from premier cooperative CEO leaders in the nation, the Summer Institute provided a unique mixture of research and experiential based learning. GICL programs are recognized for leading edge thinking about cooperatives. The Summer Institute not only delved into the issues facing today's cooperatives but it also provided a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among a widely diverse group of participants. This year was made even more extraordinary by a presentation given to an exemplary leader in cooperatives and cooperative education. John E. “Jack” Gherty, President and CEO of Land O' Lakes, Inc., was named Senior GICL Fellow by the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL) during the 34th annual Summer Institute, May 16-20. The surprise announcement was made by Michael Nolan, Director, Division of Applied Social Sciences, and Michael L. Cook, Executive Director of GICL. Gherty was recognized for establishing a culture within Land O'Lakes that values education, personal growth, innovation and advancement through collective action. Gherty's service to cooperative education includes 16 years on the GICL Board of Trustees. As a Senior GICL Fellow, Gherty will be involved in program development and collaborative teaching activities following his retirement as CEO of Land O'Lakes in October 2005.
