Visitors to the University of Missouri - Columbia campus the week of July 31 to August 6, 2005 found that the Classics are alive and well among high school students and teachers from around the USA and parts of Canada. The National Junior Classical League Annual Convention took over the MU campus for one week in August this year. Students and teachers who study and/or teach Latin and Greek classes gathered to immerse themselves in various academic, creative arts, graphic arts and athletic events with fellow Junior Classical League enthusiasts.
The course of the week held varied events celebrating all aspects of Latin and Greek influences. Some highlight events were the talent show called That's Entertainment; Certamen - a quiz bowl competition with state teams answering questions about various aspects of the Classics; Graphic Arts - student's artistic talents were displayed in the hundreds of paintings, mixed media, statues, drawings and other kinds of visual arts brought to be judged; and Olympika - student competitions in track and field and other sporting events including a mock marathon, a 2.5 mile run. General assemblies, dances and spirit contests kept the students active and involved from 7:00 am to 12:00 am every day. The Friday evening closing banquet even showcased the true Classic feel with togas being the traditional dress and a celebratory parade around campus.
The National Junior Classical League is interested in keeping Latin and Greek in the curricula in schools and colleges. This year's theme - Nil sine mango labore which means Nothing Will Come Without Great Labor emphasizes their endeavors. Next year's convention will be held at Indiana University on July 31-August 5, 2006. This conference was coordinated by Jamie Schieber.
