8:30 a.m. Pre-conference Tour - Hungry for Change:  Addressing Urban Food Deserts in St. Louis

In cities across the country, many low income residents live in food deserts with limited access to healthy and affordable foods.  In St. Louis, solutions to the lack of access to healthy foods can be discovered in a place-based comprehensive approach, spearheaded by a local neighborhood organization and MU Extension,  that links urban consumers with rural producers, provides educational support to assist families in making wise food choices, and promotes community gardens and markets in city neighborhoods.   Participants will visit Old North St. Louis, an urban-core neighborhood just north of downtown St. Louis that is at the center of a six-neighborhood food desert.  MU Extension faculty will showcase efforts related to farmers markets, community gardens, CSAs and a neighborhood-operated grocery co-op.
